PMD warns of heavy rains, flash floods in northern areas from April 16

ISLAMABAD, April 15, 2026 — The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday issued a nationwide weather advisory, warning of heavy rains, flash flooding and possible landslides in several regions beginning April 16.

According to the forecast, a fresh westerly wave is expected to enter the northwestern parts of the country on Thursday and persist in upper regions until April 18, triggering unstable weather conditions.

The PMD cautioned that heavy rainfall may lead to landslides in vulnerable areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Flash flooding is also likely in local streams and nullahs from the evening of April 16 through April 18.

Authorities warned that hailstorms and windstorms could damage standing crops in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and upper Punjab, posing risks to the agriculture sector. Additionally, strong winds, lightning and hail may damage weak infrastructure, including electricity poles, billboards and solar panels.

Weather conditions on Wednesday remained largely dry across most parts of the country, although plains experienced hot temperatures. The PMD said similar conditions are expected on Thursday, with mainly dry weather prevailing in most areas during the day. However, rain, windstorms and thunderstorms — with isolated hailstorms — are forecast in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and northeast Balochistan.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is particularly expected in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the forecast period.

In the past 24 hours, dry and hot weather persisted nationwide. The highest recorded temperatures included 45°C in Mithi, while Mohenjo Daro, Shaheed Benazirabad, Chhor and Dadu recorded highs of 43°C.

The PMD advised residents and local authorities to take precautionary measures to minimize potential damage and ensure public safety.
