Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), as the operator of the Shah Bandar Block in Sujawal District, Sindh, has made a significant gas and condensate discovery at the Pateji X-1 well. This marks the second discovery in the block, highlighting its hydrocarbon potential.
“We are pleased to announce that, following an in-house evaluation of acquired data, an additional exploratory formation has been identified in the Upper Sand (C-Sand) reservoir of the Pateji X-1 well,” PPL disclosed in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Friday.
The discovery was achieved through extensive drilling, testing, and evaluation efforts in the Shah Bandar Block. PPL operates the block with a 63% working interest, alongside its joint venture partners: Mari Petroleum Limited (MPCL) with a 32% share, Sindh Energy Holding Company Limited (SEHCL) holding 2.5%, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), also with 2.5%.
The exploration process for the Pateji X-1 well commenced on October 11, 2024, with drilling extending to a depth of 2,475 meters. The goal was to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the Upper Sands within the Lower Goru Formation. The drilling results and wireline log data identified promising hydrocarbon-bearing zones, confirming the presence of gas and condensate.
This discovery underscores the growing hydrocarbon prospects of the Shah Bandar Block. It also reinforces the strategic importance of continued exploration and development in Sindh’s energy-rich regions. The identification of additional reserves comes at a crucial time as Pakistan seeks to reduce its reliance on imported energy and enhance domestic production.
Such discoveries have far-reaching implications for Pakistan’s energy landscape. They offer potential to boost indigenous production, reduce the import bill, and support economic growth through job creation and increased energy availability. The collaborative efforts of PPL and its partners underscore the role of public-private partnerships in harnessing the country’s natural resources effectively.
PPL’s latest achievement marks another step in its mission to meet Pakistan’s growing energy demands and contribute to the country’s energy security. Further assessments and development plans are expected to follow to maximize the potential of this discovery.
