President Alvi Advocates for Chess Promotion in Pakistan

Islamabad, February 2, 2024 – President Dr. Arif Alvi has emphasized the need for promoting chess in Pakistan, particularly at the grassroots level, through collaborations with international chess organizations, the private sector, and the organization of chess championships within the country.

The President shared his thoughts during a meeting with a delegation from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Friday. The delegation included prominent figures such as Arkady Dvorkovich, President of FIDE and former Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al-Nehayan, President of the Asian Chess Federation and son of the President of the UAE, Ms. Dana Reizniece-Ozola, Managing Director of FIDE, Dr. Nigel Short, British Chess Grandmaster, Mr. Hisham Al Taher, Secretary-General of the Asian Chess Federation, and members from various chess-related organizations in Pakistan.

President Alvi emphasized the importance of promoting healthy activities, specifically highlighting the educational and mental benefits of chess. He expressed the view that chess should be integrated into the education system, citing its potential to relieve stress, enhance intellect, and boost mental faculties.

In addition to advocating for the inclusion of chess in the education system, President Alvi urged the promotion of the game through the organization of chess competitions and tournaments in the country. He stressed the significance of fostering collaborations between the public and private sectors to support and promote chess in Pakistan.

The delegation briefed President Alvi on FIDE’s role in promoting chess globally and highlighted the untapped potential for expanding chess-related activities in Pakistan. The delegation pointed out that a significant number of people in Pakistan had a fondness for the game, suggesting that chess should be introduced at the primary level in schools. Furthermore, they proposed that chess players should have the opportunity to participate in online World chess tournaments.

The meeting reflected a shared vision for elevating the status of chess in Pakistan, not just as a sport but as a tool for intellectual development and stress relief. The President’s endorsement of collaborations and the integration of chess into the education system signals a potential surge in interest and participation in chess across the country.
