Telecom regulator enhances cooperation with global technology platforms to improve online safety and remove unlawful content
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked 88,035 URLs containing unlawful online content while expanding cooperation with leading global technology companies to strengthen digital safety and enhance content moderation across online platforms.
According to the Economic Survey of Pakistan 2025-26, the telecom regulator intensified its engagement with major digital platforms, including Meta, TikTok, X, Google, and Telegram, to accelerate the identification and removal of illegal and harmful online content.
The PTA said the enhanced collaboration has resulted in improved content moderation processes, implementation of API-based compliance systems, establishment of priority escalation channels and faster removal of terrorism-related and other unlawful material.
More than 88,000 URLs blocked
The Economic Survey revealed that the PTA blocked a total of 88,035 URLs hosting prohibited online content during the review period as part of its ongoing enforcement efforts.
According to the regulator, the largest share of blocked web addresses related to content categorised under decency and morality, followed by material associated with anti-state activities, national security, hate speech, and sectarianism.
The authority said these actions are intended to strengthen digital trust, improve online safety and ensure greater compliance with Pakistan’s cyber regulatory framework.
Stronger engagement with global platforms
The PTA said closer coordination with international technology companies has improved the efficiency of content moderation and regulatory enforcement.
By introducing enhanced compliance mechanisms and dedicated communication channels with major digital platforms, the regulator aims to facilitate faster responses to requests for the removal of unlawful online content while strengthening oversight of social media services operating in Pakistan.
According to the Economic Survey, the PTA’s continued collaboration with global technology companies and its enforcement measures against illegal online material form part of the government’s broader strategy to create a safer, more secure and better-regulated digital environment for internet users across the country.
