Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has addressed recent media reports concerning the alleged blocking of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
The PTA clarified that no such action has been taken, underscoring that any blocking is carried out solely under the directives of the Government of Pakistan, in accordance with legal frameworks and guidelines.
To ensure the smooth and secure functioning of IT services and online businesses, PTA has implemented a allow list system for VPNs. This process is automated and can be accessed through both the PTA and Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) websites.
The announcement was made by PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman during a Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat meeting, chaired by Rana Mahmoodul Hasan, in Islamabad on Thursday.
During the meeting, Chairman Rehman highlighted a significant decline in VPN usage across the country. Despite the availability of VPNs, the usage of platform X in Pakistan has dropped by 70%. “Currently, only 30% of people use VPNs,” Rehman noted, suggesting the possibility of future restrictions on VPN usage.
The PTA’s initiative to allow list VPNs aims to regulate their use, ensuring that only approved VPNs are accessible in Pakistan. This move is part of a broader effort to manage internet access and security within the country. The allow list system is designed to balance the need for secure and efficient IT operations with regulatory compliance, providing a structured approach to internet governance.
