PTA Greenlights SIM Disowning Charges, Urges Responsible SIM Management

Islamabad, November 10, 2023 – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has given the nod for mobile phone operators to impose SIM disowning charges, effective January 1, 2024.

The regulatory authority has authorized Cellular Mobile Operators in Pakistan and AJK & GB to levy a “SIM Disowning Charge” of up to Rs 200 on SIMs with a retention period of less than six months.

In a press release, the PTA emphasized the need for consumers to stay informed about the status of their registered SIMs. To facilitate this, individuals can check the status of their SIMs by visiting https://cnic.sims.pk or by sending an SMS with their CNIC number (without dashes) to 668 (standard charges apply).

Consumers are strongly advised to disown or return unnecessary SIM cards, free of charge, no later than December 31, 2023. Taking this proactive step will help consumers avoid the SIM disowning charge and contribute to the responsible usage of SIMs.

The PTA underscored its commitment to national safety and security with this decision while ensuring the uninterrupted provision of quality services to all telecom consumers. The imposition of SIM disowning charges is seen as a measure to encourage responsible SIM management, curb illegal SIM issuance, and streamline the country’s telecom infrastructure.

It’s worth noting that a one-time waiver against the SIM disowning charge will be granted in cases where an illegal SIM has been issued without the knowledge or consent of the consumer. This provision aims to protect consumers who may fall victim to unauthorized SIM issuance.

The decision comes at a time when telecom authorities globally are grappling with security concerns related to unregistered and misused SIM cards. By allowing operators to impose SIM disowning charges, the PTA aims to foster a more secure and accountable telecommunications environment in Pakistan.

While the move introduces a nominal charge for SIM disowning, the PTA hopes that consumers will take advantage of the provided methods to check and manage their registered SIMs, contributing to a safer and more responsible use of telecommunication services.

As the January 1, 2024, deadline approaches, telecom users are encouraged to proactively engage with the provided methods for SIM status checks and adhere to the advisory on returning or disowning unnecessary SIM cards to avoid incurring additional charges. The PTA remains committed to ensuring the safety and quality of telecommunication services for all consumers in the country.
