PTA slashes eSIM charges, allows 10 free profile transfers

New eSIM pricing and free migration policy to take effect across Pakistan, AJ&K and Gilgit-Baltistan from August 17, 2026.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a major reduction in eSIM-related charges, introducing a maximum retail price of Rs1,500 for the issuance of an eSIM as well as the conversion of a physical SIM into an eSIM.

The move is aimed at making digital connectivity more affordable while encouraging wider adoption of modern mobile technology across the country.

According to the regulator, the revised pricing will be applicable through all Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) operating in Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

The decision forms part of PTA’s broader efforts to safeguard consumer interests and improve access to cost-effective telecommunications services.

In another consumer-friendly initiative, PTA has also approved free transfer of an eSIM profile from one compatible mobile device to another for up to ten migrations.

The new policy is expected to eliminate unnecessary costs for users who frequently switch smartphones while ensuring a standardized experience across all mobile operators.

The authority stated that both the reduced eSIM issuance charges and the complimentary transfer facility will become effective from August 17, 2026. After the tenth migration, operators may apply charges in accordance with the applicable regulations.

The latest measures are expected to accelerate the adoption of eSIM technology, which offers greater convenience by eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. eSIMs also allow users to activate mobile services digitally, making device setup faster and enabling seamless switching between mobile plans.

Industry observers believe the reduction in costs could encourage more smartphone users to shift to eSIM-enabled devices, particularly as an increasing number of premium and mid-range handsets now support the technology.

The policy is also likely to benefit business users and frequent travelers who rely on multiple mobile connections.

PTA emphasized that the initiative supports Pakistan’s ongoing digital transformation agenda by promoting affordability, transparency, and consumer convenience.

The regulator reiterated its commitment to protecting consumer rights, encouraging fair competition among telecom operators, and fostering innovation within the country’s telecommunications sector.
