PTA to Block SIMs Linked to Fake CNICs Tomorrow

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a significant crackdown on SIM cards issued on fake or cancelled Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs).

All such SIMs will be blocked by tomorrow, August 16, 2024, as part of PTA’s broader effort to enhance the security and integrity of mobile networks across the country.

This initiative is aimed at curbing the misuse of mobile connections, ensuring that every SIM in circulation is tied to a valid and legitimate CNIC. The PTA’s move is in response to rising concerns over fraudulent activities, identity theft, and other crimes linked to SIMs registered under false identities.

Consumers who suspect their SIMs might be associated with a fake or cancelled CNIC have been given a strict deadline to take corrective action. To prevent service disruptions, users are advised to verify their CNIC status with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). If found invalid, the consumer must promptly obtain a new CNIC from NADRA to ensure the continued functionality of their mobile service.

For those whose SIMs are blocked, the process of restoration involves visiting the sales center or an authorized outlet of their mobile operator to complete biometric verification. This process includes fingerprint scanning, which is cross-checked with NADRA’s database to confirm that the SIM is linked to a valid CNIC.

The PTA stresses that this measure is crucial for safeguarding Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure. By eliminating SIM cards registered under fraudulent identities, the PTA aims to significantly reduce the occurrence of fraud, identity theft, and related criminal activities.

Mobile operators nationwide have been instructed to fully cooperate with the PTA in executing this initiative. Consumers are strongly urged to act immediately and follow the required procedures to avoid any inconvenience.

As the August 16 deadline looms, mobile users are reminded of the importance of ensuring that their connections are properly registered. This effort by the PTA represents a one-time opportunity for users to rectify their records and comply with the regulatory requirements.

For additional support, consumers can reach out to their respective mobile operators or visit the nearest sales center to complete the necessary steps before the deadline.
