Punjab Allocates Rs 842 Billion for Development Budget 2024-25

LAHORE, June 13, 2024 – In a significant move to bolster the province’s development, Punjab has allocated Rs842 billion for its Annual Development Plan in the budget for the financial year 2024-25.

This allocation marks a substantial increase of 28.5% compared to the Rs655 billion set aside in the outgoing fiscal year.

Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman announced the budget, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing various sectors. The overall budget outlay for the province is Rs5.446 trillion, with a notable focus on development and public service delivery.

The current and service delivery budget has been increased to Rs2.633 trillion, up 27% from Rs2.074 trillion in the previous fiscal year. Additionally, Rs375 billion has been earmarked for wheat debt retirement, showcasing the government’s intent to address agricultural challenges.

The budget outlines significant allocations across key sectors, aiming to improve infrastructure, healthcare, education, and public safety:

• Health: Rs539 billion

• Education: Rs669.7 billion

• Infrastructure: Rs374.2 billion

• Local Government: Rs321.7 billion

• Public Safety and Police: Rs220 billion

• Agriculture: Rs117.2 billion

Minister Shuja-ur-Rehman emphasized the importance of these allocations in driving the province’s growth and addressing the needs of its citizens. The health sector, receiving Rs539 billion, will see enhancements in medical facilities and services, while the education sector’s allocation of Rs669.7 billion aims to improve educational infrastructure and access.

Infrastructure development, with an allocation of Rs374.2 billion, is set to boost connectivity and transportation within the province. The local government sector, receiving Rs321.7 billion, will focus on enhancing civic amenities and services. Public safety and police have been allocated Rs220 billion to ensure law and order, while Rs117.2 billion for agriculture will support farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

This budget reflects the Punjab government’s dedication to comprehensive development, ensuring that resources are effectively utilized to benefit the province’s populace. The increased funding across these critical sectors is expected to foster economic growth, improve living standards, and create a more sustainable and prosperous Punjab.
