Islamabad, February 25, 2025 – The province of Punjab continues to experience heavy downpour as a new westerly weather system strengthens across the region, bringing persistent rainfall, thunderstorms, and snowfall in various parts of the country.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the wet spell is likely to persist, affecting daily life and causing possible urban flooding in low-lying areas.
Severe Downpour Across Punjab
Multiple cities in Punjab, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Sargodha, have witnessed continuous downpour, leading to waterlogged streets and significant disruptions to daily activities. The rainfall, accompanied by strong winds, has also been reported in Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Khanewal, and Mianwali, where residents are facing traffic congestion and power outages due to the prolonged wet weather.
According to PMD forecasts, the downpour will continue in these areas over the next few days, increasing the risk of urban flooding in densely populated cities. Authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary travel in areas prone to water accumulation.
Snowfall and Downpour in Northern Areas
Beyond Punjab, the impact of this weather system is being felt across northern regions, including Murree, Galiyat, Swat, Abbottabad, and Mansehra, where continuous downpour and snowfall have caused temperatures to plummet. In Dir, Chitral, Kohistan, and Shangla, heavy snowfall has blanketed roads, making travel extremely hazardous. Tourists have been advised to exercise caution, as slippery roads and potential landslides pose significant risks.
Balochistan Also Affected
The storm system has not only impacted Punjab but has also caused torrential downpour in parts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Chaman, and Zhob. Heavy rainfall in the upper regions of the province has led to snowfall, while hailstorms have been reported in several districts, further complicating mobility and daily activities. Electricity and communication networks in various areas have been disrupted due to the severe weather conditions.
Extended Forecast and Warnings
The PMD has stated that the ongoing downpour is expected to continue across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan until March 2, 2025. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to landslides, flash floods, and road blockages. Residents of Punjab are advised to prepare for continued wet weather and take necessary precautions to minimize potential risks associated with the heavy downpour.
