LAHORE, May 8, 2025 – In light of escalating military tensions between Pakistan and India, the Punjab government has announced a two-day closure of all schools and educational institutions across the province.
This precautionary measure is set to be in effect on May 9 and May 10, with normal academic activities expected to resume on Monday, May 12.
The announcement was made by Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, who stated that the decision applies to all schools, colleges, and universities—both public and private—within Punjab. “The safety and security of students, teachers, and staff are our utmost priority during this volatile time,” he said.
This move follows a series of military escalations between the two neighboring countries. Earlier in the day, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that Pakistan’s armed forces had successfully neutralized 25 Israeli-made Harop drones that were launched by India into Pakistani territory. The situation has triggered widespread concern, prompting authorities to act swiftly to safeguard public institutions, particularly schools, which are seen as vulnerable civilian spaces.
The Punjab government has directed all district education authorities to ensure compliance with the closure order and to remain on high alert. The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) has also postponed intermediate and matriculation examinations that were scheduled during this period. Revised exam dates will be announced soon.
Tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations flared up after India launched airstrikes on Pakistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir early Wednesday. The strikes, which Islamabad has labeled a “blatant act of war,” resulted in the martyrdom of at least 31 civilians, including children, and left 57 injured. Several civilian sites, including mosques and hydropower installations, were targeted.
In retaliation, Pakistan’s armed forces launched a strong counteroffensive, downing five Indian jets and destroying key military assets across the Line of Control (LoC).
As the situation unfolds, parents, teachers, and students across Punjab are advised to stay informed through official channels. Authorities have urged calm and cooperation, assuring that all schools will reopen once security conditions stabilize.
