PMD warns of thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms in Islamabad and northern regions

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain, thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms in Islamabad during the next 24 hours as a westerly weather system continues to affect northern and western parts of the country.

According to the PMD weather update issued on Thursday, partly cloudy conditions accompanied by rain-windstorms, thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms are expected in Islamabad and surrounding areas.

The department said similar weather conditions may continue on Friday evening and night.

National weather outlook

The PMD said a westerly wave is currently influencing western and northern regions of Pakistan, while continental air prevails over other parts of the country.

For Thursday, mainly hot and dry weather is expected across most regions, while southern districts are likely to remain very hot during daytime.

However, windstorms and rain-thunderstorms are forecast in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, upper Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining hilly areas.

The PMD warned that isolated hailstorms and heavy rainfall may also occur in these regions.

On Friday, hot and dry weather is expected to persist in most parts of the country, particularly southern areas, while rain and thunderstorms are likely in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and nearby hilly regions.

Rainfall recorded in past 24 hours

During the last 24 hours, rain and thunderstorms were reported at isolated locations in Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Notable rainfall recorded included:

• Garhi Dupatta: 9 mm

• Muzaffarabad Airport: 7 mm

• Bannu and Mir Khani: 14 mm

• Parachinar: 12 mm

• Kalam: 10 mm

• Murree: 8 mm

• Jhelum: 7 mm

• Skardu: 7 mm

The PMD said the highest temperatures recorded on Wednesday were in southern Sindh cities, where Dadu, Jacobabad, Mohenjodaro and Shaheed Benazirabad reached 47°C.

Officials advised citizens to remain cautious during thunderstorms and hailstorms, particularly in vulnerable and hilly areas.
