ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted rain and snowfall for the capital city, Islamabad, on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

The weather report indicates a significant change in weather patterns across various regions of the country, urging residents and tourists to take necessary precautions.

The PMD’s weather report for January 31, 2024, reveals that rain, accompanied by snowfall in mountainous areas, is anticipated in several parts of the country. The affected regions include Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the Pothohar region, Islamabad, Kashmir, and surrounding hilly areas. Cold weather conditions are expected elsewhere in the country, with shallow to moderate fog persisting in a few plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh.

The meteorological department has issued an alert for potential snowfall over the upper parts of the country on January 30 and 31, warning that it might impact transportation. Tourists planning to visit these areas are advised to exercise caution and stay updated on weather developments.

According to the synoptic situation outlined by the PMD, a westerly wave is currently influencing the western and upper parts of the country and is likely to persist in the upper regions for the next few days.

Looking back at the weather on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, cold weather prevailed in most areas of the country, with cloudy conditions in upper parts. Rain, including snowfall in mountainous regions, was recorded in Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the Pothohar region, Islamabad, Kashmir, and surrounding hilly areas. Shallow to moderate fog lingered in a few plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh.

Over the past 24 hours, mainly cold and partly cloudy weather dominated most areas of the country. Rainfall was observed in Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pothohar region, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Fog and smog were prevalent over the plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh.

The recorded rainfall in millimeters included Muzaffarabad (City 10 & Airport 05), Garhi Dupatta 04, and Kotli 01 in Kashmir; Balakot, Malam Jabba, Pattan 04, Kakul 03, Saidu Sharif 02 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; and Quetta Samungli 02 in Balochistan. In Gilgit-Baltistan, Gupis received 01 millimeter of rainfall. Additionally, snowfall in inches was recorded in Malamjabba with 02 inches.

The lowest minimum temperatures recorded today in degrees Celsius were Leh and Kalam at -07, Gupis at -05, Skardu at -04, and Rawalakot at -03.
