Rain-Wind Thunderstorm Expected to Hit Upper Sindh on October 16, 2023

Islamabad, October 16, 2023 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory, predicting a rain-wind thunderstorm in upper Sindh for Monday, October 16, 2023.

In their daily report, the PMD has also indicated the likelihood of similar weather conditions in various other regions of the country.

According to the PMD’s forecast, rain-wind thunderstorms are expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Punjab, upper Sindh, northeast Baluchistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Additionally, higher-altitude areas are likely to experience snowfall, and there may be isolated hailstorms in the plains. Furthermore, heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated locations.

The PMD has issued a warning stating that moderate to heavy rainfall may lead to increased water flows in local Nullahs/streams and could potentially trigger landslides in vulnerable areas. These vulnerable regions include Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, and Abbottabad, with these conditions expected to persist from Sunday night through Tuesday.

Regarding the synoptic situation, the PMD explained that a westerly wave is currently affecting the upper and central parts of Pakistan, contributing to these weather patterns.

Over the past 24 hours, rain-thunderstorms were recorded in upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan. In contrast, the weather remained dry in other parts of the country.

Rainfall in millimeters (mm) for different regions included Punjab: Lahore Airport 78, Lahore City 59, Chakwal 52, Hafizabad 15, Kasur, Sialkot Airport 12, Narowal, Gujrat 10, Gujranwala, Sialkot City 08, Mandi Bahauddin 04, Mangla, Jhelum 01. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Malam Jabba 17, Bannu 13, Dir 11, Kalam 08, Saidu Sharif 07, Mir Khani 04, Parachinar 03, Cherat, Drosh 01. In Kashmir: Kotli 05, Muzaffarabad Airport & City 04. In Gilgit Baltistan: Bagrote 03 and Bunji 01.

The recorded highest maximum temperatures in degrees Celsius (°C) included Shaheed Benazirabad at 39°C and Bahawalpur at 38°C.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather reports to ensure their safety during this weather event.
