England cricket director says a comeback from retired all-rounder Ben Stokes before next summer’s Ashes cannot be ruled out.
England director of men’s cricket Rob Key has suggested that a return to international cricket by former captain Ben Stokes remains a possibility, despite the all-rounder’s recent retirement from the game.
Key indicated that he would not be shocked if Stokes decided to reverse his decision ahead of England’s highly anticipated Ashes series against Australia next summer.
Stokes brought an end to his international career during England’s third and final Test against New Zealand last month.
The dynamic all-rounder concluded a remarkable journey that saw him represent England in 122 Test matches, 114 One-Day Internationals, and 43 Twenty20 Internationals.
Throughout his career, he played a pivotal role in several of England’s most memorable victories and established himself as one of the country’s greatest modern cricketers.
His retirement came after a challenging period both on and off the field. Stokes missed the previous Test against New Zealand due to an investigation into an incident at a London nightclub.
The matter arose after he breached the team’s midnight curfew, although the investigation later cleared him of any wrongdoing. The controversy reportedly contributed to his decision to step away from international cricket.
The retirement also coincided with significant changes within the England setup. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) parted ways with Test head coach Brendon McCullum, appointing former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as his replacement.
Meanwhile, experienced batter Joe Root was named as England’s new Test captain following Stokes’s departure.
Despite these developments, Key emphasized that England would continue to welcome Stokes back should he decide to return.
He revealed that there had been no indication from the all-rounder regarding a potential comeback, but maintained that predicting Stokes’s future decisions was never straightforward.
Key also disclosed that he had not yet discussed the possibility of a Stokes return with newly appointed head coach Fleming. However, he acknowledged that seeing the former England captain return for an Ashes campaign would be a remarkable storyline and a significant boost for the national side.
With the Ashes still months away, speculation surrounding a potential Ben Stokes return is likely to continue as England prepare for one of cricket’s biggest rivalries.
