Japan-only policy affects physical PS5 edition, while Xbox codes remain unaffected by expiration rules.
Rockstar Games has confirmed that physical PlayStation 5 copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) sold in Japan will include download codes that expire 170 days after the game launches on November 19, 2026, due to local regulatory requirements.
Unlike traditional physical releases, GTA 6 will not ship with a game disc. Instead, buyers of the boxed PS5 edition in Japan will receive a voucher that allows them to download the full game digitally.
According to an updated Rockstar Games support page, the download codes included with Japanese PS5 copies will expire around May 8, 2027. Rockstar said the Japan-specific policy is required to comply with local regulations governing digital products.
The company explained that Japanese consumer protection laws require digital goods to display clear expiration dates, prompting publisher Take-Two Interactive to include a 170-day redemption period in the voucher terms.
Interestingly, Rockstar confirmed that the restriction applies only to the PlayStation 5 version sold in Japan. Download codes for the Xbox Series X/S edition do not expire and are not region-locked. However, the company has not explained why the compliance policy differs between the two console platforms.
Players purchasing GTA 6 outside Japan will not be affected by the policy, and physical editions sold in other regions will continue to follow their respective local distribution rules.
The announcement has sparked criticism on social media, with many players questioning the growing trend toward digital-only releases. Some fans argued that boxed editions containing expiring download vouchers feel more like temporary access than permanent ownership.
Others speculated that the expiration period may apply only to downloadable bonus content rather than the base game itself. Rockstar, however, has not clarified whether the main game download is exempt from the expiration policy.
Rockstar has advised Japanese customers purchasing the PS5 version to buy from local retailers to avoid regional activation issues. The company also recommends redeeming both the main game voucher and any downloadable content codes within the 170-day period.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for worldwide release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99. Pre-orders are already available, although Rockstar has yet to announce a PC release date.
