Samsung is reportedly working on a second-generation version of its tri-fold smartphone, which could arrive with a noticeably slimmer design. The upcoming device, expected to be called the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold 2, may feature a new hinge mechanism that could make it thinner than the original model.
The first-generation Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold was unveiled in December last year. Despite its innovative design, the device was discontinued in several markets shortly after launch. One of its most notable features was its ultra-thin profile, measuring around 3.9mm to 4.2mm when fully unfolded and approximately 12mm when folded.
However, according to a recent rumor, Samsung is already developing a successor that could improve on that design. The Galaxy Z TriFold 2 is said to benefit from an entirely new hinge system currently being developed by the company. This redesigned hinge could allow the foldable device to achieve an even slimmer profile while maintaining durability and structural stability.
The hinge is one of the most critical components in foldable smartphones, as it determines how smoothly the device folds and how thin the overall structure can be. By introducing a more advanced hinge design, Samsung may be aiming to improve both the portability and usability of its next-generation tri-fold device.
Interestingly, the new hinge technology may not be limited to the TriFold lineup. According to the same source, Samsung could adapt a modified version of this hinge mechanism for its single-folding smartphones as well. This means that future Galaxy foldable models may also benefit from a thinner and more refined design.
It remains unclear, however, when this hinge will appear in other foldable phones. Samsung is expected to release several single-folding Galaxy devices in the coming months, but it is uncertain whether those models will use the new hinge system.
Reports suggest the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 itself may not launch until mid-2027, which raises the possibility that Samsung could first introduce the new hinge technology with this device before rolling it out to other foldable smartphones in the future.
