South Korean tech giant Samsung may be preparing to enter the rollable smartphone market, according to a newly discovered patent filing. After becoming a global leader in foldable smartphones, the company now appears to be exploring another futuristic form factor with an expandable display and a movable rear camera system.
The patent, recently spotted by WearView, showcases a unique smartphone concept featuring a rollable display that can expand from within the chassis. The filing suggests Samsung is actively researching next-generation mobile designs beyond its existing Galaxy Fold and Flip lineup.
Rollable Display Changes Phone Size
According to the patent sketches and renders shared by WearView, the device would look like a standard smartphone when the display is fully retracted. In this compact form, the phone resembles flagship devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.
However, once the screen is extended, the device transforms into a larger tablet-like form factor similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7. This expandable mechanism could provide users with a bigger viewing area for gaming, multitasking, and entertainment while maintaining portability.
Movable Camera Module Adds Innovation
One of the most interesting details in the patent is the movable rear camera module. The camera appears to shift position along with the expanding display, ensuring proper alignment regardless of screen size.
The patent illustrations also show a cutout on the back panel designed to support the moving camera setup. Samsung further mentioned that the device may include sensors capable of detecting display size changes, antenna movement, and hardware repositioning caused by the rollable mechanism.
Samsung Continues Futuristic Display Research
This is not Samsung’s first experiment with rollable technology. In 2023, the company showcased a rollable OLED display prototype at a technology event. Earlier, in 2021, Samsung also filed a patent for a device capable of both folding and rolling.
While patents do not guarantee a commercial launch, the latest filing indicates Samsung remains committed to developing innovative smartphone designs. The concept appears similar to devices like Motorola’s Moto Rizr concept and Tecno’s Phantom Ultimate concept, both of which demonstrated expandable smartphone displays in recent years.
