Samsung Electronics has revealed a new display technology called Flex Titanium, offering an early look at the engineering behind its next-generation foldable smartphones ahead of the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22.
The technology is expected to debut in the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8, which Samsung is widely expected to unveil during its upcoming launch event.
Flex Titanium aims to reduce foldable display creases
Samsung said Flex Titanium is designed to improve the durability and appearance of foldable displays while significantly reducing the visibility of the crease that forms where the screen folds.
The new system combines two key components: an ultra-thin, flexible titanium-alloy film positioned beneath the OLED display and a titanium support plate underneath the panel.
According to Samsung, the titanium-alloy film provides greater rigidity than conventional polymer materials while remaining extremely thin—measuring approximately one-third the thickness of a human hair.
The company said this allows the display to maintain structural strength without increasing the overall thickness of the device.
Titanium support improves durability
Beneath the display, Samsung has incorporated a titanium support plate featuring micro-patterned holes along the fold line.
The design enables the plate to flex naturally while maintaining a strong bond with the display above it, helping improve long-term durability without affecting the folding mechanism.
Samsung said the approach balances flexibility, strength and premium design while addressing one of the biggest engineering challenges facing foldable smartphones.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 series launch approaching
The announcement comes just days before Samsung’s second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year, where the company is expected to introduce three new foldable smartphones: the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8.
Numerous leaks have already revealed the expected designs, colour options and hardware specifications of the upcoming devices, but Flex Titanium marks Samsung’s first official look at one of the technologies powering the new lineup.
The company said titanium presents unique manufacturing challenges but believes the new design delivers improvements in durability, display quality and overall user experience.
Samsung is expected to showcase Flex Titanium in greater detail when the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is officially unveiled on July 22.
