Sandra Bullock reflects on uncomfortable early auditions and the career decisions that helped shape her Hollywood success.

Sandra Bullock has opened up about some of the uncomfortable auditions she encountered early in her acting career, revealing how they taught her the importance of maintaining personal boundaries in Hollywood.

Speaking to her longtime friend Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, the Practical Magic 2 star reflected on her early years in New York, where she waited tables while pursuing acting opportunities.

Sandra Bullock recalls uncomfortable auditions

Bullock said she encountered uncomfortable situations during her early auditions, including meetings with people who made inappropriate demands.

“I was auditioning for every pervert that existed, asking me to drop my pants. I was like, ‘Nope, not the role for me,’” Bullock recalled.

Like many aspiring actors, Bullock said she initially accepted almost every opportunity because of the fear that another job might not come along.

“I was working my way up. Every working actor thinks you will never work again so you just take what you can get and make the most of it,” she said.

However, Bullock eventually realised that she needed to become more selective about the projects and roles she pursued.

Bullock moved beyond romantic comedies

One of the biggest turning points in Bullock’s career came when she decided to step away from the romantic comedies that had helped establish her as a Hollywood star.

“I said, ‘I need to stop right now with the rom-coms,’ because I was getting so much shit for them. And I took a role in this film called Crash,” she said.

The decision proved significant. Crash went on to win Best Picture at the 2006 Academy Awards, while Bullock later secured the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in The Blind Side.

Four years after The Lost City, Bullock has returned to the big screen with Practical Magic 2, marking her first film appearance since 2022.

The sequel reunites Bullock with Nicole Kidman and has also made a strong start at the box office. It earned $13 million domestically on Friday, including previews, and is tracking towards an opening weekend of around $30 million.
