SBP Orders Banks to Close Branches in Smog-Affected Punjab

Karachi, November 8, 2023 – In response to the Punjab government’s public holiday declaration on Friday, November 10, 2023, due to the severe smog situation, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has directed all commercial banks and microfinance institutions (MFIs) to close their branches in affected areas of the province.

The SBP’s decision to close bank branches in Lahore Division (including Lahore, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, and Kasur districts), Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, and Narowal districts is intended to minimize the impact of smog on public health.

“The Punjab government has already decided to observe a public holiday on Friday, November 10, 2023. In accordance with this, all banks/MFIs are required to keep their branches closed in the specified areas on that day,” the SBP stated in a statement.

The SBP also urged all banks and MFIs to ensure that their employees are provided with adequate respiratory protection while working in polluted areas.

“All banks/MFIs are required to ensure that their employees have access to masks, respirators, or other appropriate respiratory protection equipment while working in the specified areas,” the statement continued.

The SBP has also called on all banks and MFIs to take steps to minimize their own environmental impact. “All banks/MFIs are encouraged to implement measures to reduce their environmental impact, such as using energy-efficient lighting and appliances, and adopting paperless or electronic banking procedures,” the statement said.

The SBP’s decision to close bank branches in affected areas of Punjab is a significant step in protecting public health during the current smog crisis. The bank is also taking steps to ensure that its employees are protected from the harmful effects of air pollution. By taking these actions, the SBP is demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability and public safety.
