Second Generation MG ZS Set to Launch as Hybrid SUV

MG is gearing up to launch the second-generation MG ZS, a hybrid compact SUV set to make its debut in Europe and Australia later this month.

This new model represents a significant evolution from its predecessor, as it will feature a hybrid powertrain—a marked departure from the first-generation ZS, which offered both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) options.

The shift to a hybrid-only variant underscores MG’s commitment to greener technologies as it seeks to capture a larger share of the global SUV market.

The second-generation MG ZS is expected to bring fresh design cues and advanced features to the table. The new model’s design draws inspiration from the recently launched MG 3 supermini, giving it a modern and aggressive look.

At the front, the ZS boasts a large air intake grille paired with a distinctive double-mouth surround, giving it a bolder appearance. The headlight clusters are also similar to those of the MG 3, while the side profile retains much of the first-generation ZS’s silhouette.

However, the rear design sets it apart, with taillights that closely resemble those of the MG 3, adding a touch of sportiness to the compact SUV.

Though MG has yet to reveal the specifics of the new ZS’s powertrain, industry speculation suggests that it will likely share the hybrid setup of the MG 3.

This would mean a combination of a 1.5-liter petrol engine and an electric motor, potentially delivering a combined output of around 143 kW and 425 Nm of torque.

Such a configuration would offer a balanced blend of performance and efficiency, making the ZS a competitive option in the hybrid SUV market.

The launch of the second-generation MG ZS is indicative of a broader strategy by SAIC, MG’s parent company, to diversify its offerings for international markets.

In recent years, MG has moved away from simply rebadging Chinese-market models for overseas sales. Instead, the brand is increasingly focused on developing unique models tailored to the preferences and regulations of specific regions.

As the global automotive industry continues to shift towards electrification, the second-generation MG ZS is poised to play a crucial role in MG’s strategy to revitalize its brand and boost sales in key markets like Europe and Australia.

With declining sales in recent years, SAIC is betting that the hybrid ZS will resonate with consumers seeking eco-friendly alternatives in the compact SUV segment.
