The Rare Beauty founder says she is embracing ageing and has no plans to recreate the appearance that defined her beauty era a decade ago.
Selena Gomez has addressed the continued fascination with her iconic 2016 beauty era, telling fans that she has no intention of turning back the clock.
The Rare Beauty founder, 34, discussed ageing, beauty and the nostalgia surrounding her appearance from a decade ago in People magazine’s latest cover story.
Gomez, who is set to receive the inaugural Beauty Impact Award for her mental health advocacy, said she has embraced getting older and is not concerned about the physical changes that come with age.
“Getting older has been so much fun. I’m not scared at all. I love getting older,” Gomez said.
“Yeah, things are going to change and things are going to sag, but you’re alive… I think age is just a number in many ways,” she added.
Gomez’s smoky-eye looks from 2016 continue to resurface on social media, with fans regularly sharing and revisiting photographs from that period of her career.
While the singer and actress said she enjoys seeing the throwbacks, she admitted that some fans have become particularly invested in recreating that version of her.
“I’ve got to be honest, the 2016 throwbacks and all of it is so much fun, but people get really intense,” Gomez said.
She joked that some people appeared to want to “freeze” her in that period of her life, before reflecting on what was happening behind the scenes.
“I don’t know… maybe it was probably more interesting because I’m now chilling, which is great. But it was such a hectic period in my life,” she explained.
“Of course I had to rock a smoky eye. I was trying to be cool!”
Today, Gomez has adopted a softer and more relaxed approach to her beauty routine. However, she acknowledged that recreating a smoky-eye look now naturally produces a different result.
“Now I do a smoky eye, and it just looks a little different,” she said.
“I think people always want me to look the way I did, and that’s just not going to happen.”
Rather than trying to reproduce her appearance from 2016, Gomez appears comfortable with the changes that come with growing older.
Her comments highlight her willingness to appreciate the nostalgia surrounding her earlier career while embracing her current appearance and moving into a new stage of her life.
