Selena Gomez recently opened up about her past relationships, acknowledging the mistakes she made and the valuable lessons she has learned.
The singer and actress spoke candidly about how these experiences have helped her build a healthier and more fulfilling relationship with her fiancé, Benny Blanco.
During a joint appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco discussed various aspects of their relationship, including conflict resolution, personal growth, and the importance of emotional maturity. Their conversation, released on March 24, came just days after they dropped their collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, offering fans an even deeper insight into their love story.
Gomez, 32, reflected on how her previous relationships shaped her approach to love and commitment. She admitted that in the past, she had a tendency to be reactive, something she later realized was preventing her from having a meaningful and lasting relationship.
“I’ve been guilty of being reactive in my past relationships. I think that’s why I was single for five years—I needed to take time for myself and truly understand who I was before I could give my best to someone else,” Gomez shared during the podcast.
Looking back, Gomez believes that taking time away from relationships was crucial to her emotional growth. She explained that had she met Blanco ten years ago, she wouldn’t have been in the right headspace to be with him. “I tell him all the time, if we had met a decade ago, I wouldn’t have been ready. He didn’t deserve to deal with the things I was going through at the time,” Gomez explained.
The actress and singer also emphasized that learning from her past has allowed her to navigate her relationship with Blanco in a much healthier way. “I’ve made mistakes, but I’ve learned from them. I just want to make sure I get this one right,” Gomez said.
Gomez also touched on how stubbornness can impact a relationship, noting that people of all gender sometimes struggle with wanting to be right. However, she praised Blanco for his patience and understanding, which has helped her grow as a person. “I used to find it really difficult to communicate during disagreements, but he makes it so much easier. Even when I’m frustrated, he’s quick to understand and make things better.”
Since going public with their relationship in December 2023, Gomez and Blanco have only grown stronger as a couple. Their bond was further solidified when Blanco proposed to Gomez with a stunning marquise diamond, marking a new chapter in their love story.
With a new outlook on love and personal growth, Selena Gomez is embracing her relationship with Benny Blanco with more wisdom and emotional awareness than ever before.
