Pakistan’s ODI captain rejects calls to drop the struggling batters and hints that Sahibzada Farhan could receive opportunities in upcoming assignments.
Pakistan ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has backed Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub despite their recent batting struggles, ruling out immediate changes to the top order while leaving the door open for new players in future assignments.
Speaking ahead of Pakistan’s tri-series match against England at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Shaheen indicated that the team management would continue supporting the experienced opener and the young batting all-rounder. However, he suggested that additional batting options could be considered if the team required reinforcements.
The comments come as Pakistan continues its home ODI tri-series against England and Sri Lanka, with questions emerging over the consistency of its top-order batting.
Sahibzada Farhan Could Get ODI Opportunities
Sahibzada Farhan’s impressive performances in T20 internationals have strengthened calls for his inclusion in Pakistan’s ODI squad. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has also advocated giving the 30-year-old batter an opportunity in the 50-over format.
Shaheen acknowledged Farhan’s current form and confirmed that the team could consider him for upcoming assignments if required. He also indicated that the management intended to provide opportunities to other players and assess their progress after the ongoing series.
Pakistan’s current reserves include a wicketkeeper and several spinners, leaving room for discussions about strengthening the batting department.
Shaheen Defends Saim Ayub’s Selection
Ayub has struggled to produce substantial scores in recent ODIs. The left-hander managed just seven runs against Sri Lanka and eight against England in his first two appearances in the ongoing tri-series.
Despite these performances, Shaheen stressed that the 24-year-old offers value beyond his batting. His bowling and fielding provide Pakistan with additional options, particularly when the team needs to control the opposition’s scoring.
The captain also pointed out that players can experience difficult periods and should not be judged solely on one or two series. He expressed confidence that Ayub would regain his form and contribute with the bat in upcoming matches.
Fakhar Zaman Retains Captain’s Confidence
Fakhar has also faced difficulties, scoring only 16 runs across his first two tri-series appearances, including a golden duck against England.
Nevertheless, Shaheen described the left-handed opener as a key member of Pakistan’s ODI setup and emphasised the importance of retaining him in the side.
The Pakistan captain also addressed concerns about his bowling pace, saying it had improved. He maintained that accurate line and length remain more important than speed alone when trying to trouble opposing batters.
Pakistan will continue evaluating its combination as the tri-series progresses, with potential changes dependent on the team’s requirements and players’ performances.
