After leading Bangladesh in the final match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Najmul Hossain Shanto is expressing his readiness to assume the role of the team’s permanent captain.
While the decision lies with selectors, Shanto is keen on taking charge following the team’s high-scoring eight-wicket loss to Australia.
In a post-match statement in Pune, the 25-year-old captain, who also led against India earlier in the tournament, conveyed his preparedness, saying, “I’ve been doing it for a while now, and personally, I think I’m ready. If I get the opportunity, definitely, I’m ready to do it perfectly.”
Throughout the World Cup, Shakib Al Hasan captained Bangladesh, but Shanto sees himself as a viable candidate, especially considering the potential departure of Shakib after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Reflecting on his World Cup experience, Shanto highlighted its value, stating, “I have learned a lot since it was my first World Cup. This experience will help me.”
Despite a commendable batting performance, including a century from Mitchell Marsh in the World Cup, Shanto emphasized the significance of consistency in batting positions. He expressed concerns about the team’s fluctuating batting order, stating, “If we had stayed in the same place, maybe we could have achieved something different.”
Shanto acknowledges the need for occasional adjustments based on the opponent’s strength but emphasizes the importance of minimizing such changes for team stability. Looking ahead, Bangladesh is set for an ODI rebuild with a multi-format tour to New Zealand.
