Prime Minister reaffirms Pakistan’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and calls for restraint and diplomacy amid regional tensions.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned what he described as an attempted drone attack against the Holy Site of Makkah Al-Mukarramah, saying the people of Pakistan were saddened and perturbed by the incident. Pakistan’s state broadcaster and the Associated Press of Pakistan reported the prime minister’s remarks on Wednesday.
In a post on X, Shehbaz said he condemned the attempted attack in the strongest terms and expressed what he described as deep anguish over the incident.
“The people of Pakistan are saddened and perturbed by this outrageous act,” he said, according to the statement reported by Radio Pakistan.
Shehbaz praises Saudi security forces
The prime minister praised the Royal Saudi Armed Forces for what he described as their vigilance, courage and professionalism in responding to the incident.
He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the security and sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain.
“Pakistan stands unwaveringly, shoulder to shoulder with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Shehbaz said in his message.
PM calls for restraint and diplomacy
Shehbaz also called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation, saying the region had already suffered extensively because of conflict.
He maintained that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path towards peace, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.
The prime minister’s comments come amid wider regional tensions and follow Pakistan’s recent expressions of solidarity with Saudi Arabia over security-related incidents. Radio Pakistan reported earlier this month that Shehbaz had condemned an attack targeting civilian and energy facilities in Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Kingdom’s security and territorial integrity.
Pakistan reaffirms support for Saudi Arabia
The latest statement also comes after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in August, under which the three countries committed to enhanced defence cooperation and collective security.
Shehbaz’s latest remarks reaffirm Pakistan’s stated position of supporting Saudi Arabia’s security while calling for restraint and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
