Lahore, February 7, 2025 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday urged the green shirts of Pakistan’s cricket team to defeat India in their highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match.
Speaking passionately at the inauguration of the renovated Gaddafi Stadium, PM Shehbaz emphasized the importance of securing victory against arch-rival India in Dubai. He expressed his full confidence in the team’s abilities and hoped they would win the hearts of Pakistanis by bringing home the Champions Trophy.
PM Shehbaz, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, officially unveiled the refurbished Gaddafi Stadium, which underwent extensive upgrades to host the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, set to run from February 19 to March 9.
Addressing the ceremony, Shehbaz directed Naqvi to recognize the workers involved in the renovation efforts by arranging a special visit to London for them as a token of appreciation. He also commended the Pakistani cricket team for their stellar performances in recent matches and urged them to carry forward their momentum into the prestigious tournament.
Highlighting the significance of hosting the global cricketing event in Pakistan after nearly three decades, Shehbaz assured that the Punjab government and PCB would implement robust security measures to ensure a safe and successful event.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable politicians, PCB officials, players from the national men’s cricket team, Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise owners, and former PCB heads Zaka Ashraf and Najam Sethi. The event also featured live music performances by renowned artists Ali Zafar, Arif Lohar, and Aima Baig, along with a dazzling fireworks and light show.
Gaddafi Stadium has undergone major enhancements, including the installation of advanced LED lighting, two modern scoreboard screens, upgraded seating, newly constructed hospitality boxes, and improved amenities for both players and spectators.
The revamped stadium is set to host two matches of the tri-nation ODI series featuring Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa on February 8 and 10. Additionally, it will be the venue for at least four key Champions Trophy matches, including the second semi-final on March 5. If India fails to reach the final, Gaddafi Stadium may also host the grand finale on March 9.
