ISLAMABAD, May 6, 2026 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said Pakistan has emerged as a key force for peace and stability in the region, crediting its diplomatic efforts for facilitating unprecedented engagement between Iran and the United States.

Addressing the 6th International Paigham-e-Islam Conference, the prime minister said Pakistan played a central role in encouraging dialogue between the two countries, which had not held direct talks since 1979. He said discussions were held in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, leading to a ceasefire agreement.

“This reflects the trust the international community places in Pakistan,” he said, adding that the country’s diplomatic efforts were aimed at promoting regional peace and stability.

The conference was attended by senior religious and international dignitaries, including Palestinian religious affairs adviser Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, and Saudi Ambassador Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malkiy.

Sharif said Pakistan’s relations with key partners, including Saudi Arabia, China, and Türkiye, had strengthened, contributing to broader regional stability. He also praised Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his role in supporting peace efforts.

He commended Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and military leadership for facilitating diplomatic engagement that brought parties to the negotiating table.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s positions on Kashmir and Palestine, the prime minister said the country would continue to support their right to self-determination and independence. He also condemned terrorism and efforts to divide the Muslim world.

Religious scholars were urged to play a stronger role in promoting unity and national cohesion.

In a separate address, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, emphasizing sustained diplomatic engagement and collective action through the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. He also highlighted Pakistan’s efforts in countering Islamophobia and promoting interfaith harmony.

The conference concluded with calls for continued unity within the Muslim world and stronger diplomatic efforts to resolve ongoing regional conflicts.
