Province to observe holidays on June 25 and 26 as authorities tighten security and service arrangements for Muharram
KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has announced two public holidays across the province on June 25 and 26, 2026 (Thursday and Friday) on the occasion of Ashura, the Sindh Information Department confirmed on Monday.
According to an official notification, the holidays will be observed on Muharram 9 and 10, 1448 AH. During this period, all government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous institutions, corporations, and local councils under provincial jurisdiction will remain closed. Essential services, however, will continue to operate without interruption.
The provincial government said the decision has been taken to facilitate the observance of Ashura, a significant religious occasion marked by processions, majalis, and gatherings held across Sindh.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed authorities to ensure comprehensive security arrangements throughout the province during Muharram. He stressed that uninterrupted civic services and coordinated administrative measures must be maintained during the religious observances.
The chief minister underscored that maintaining law and order and facilitating mourners remain top priorities of the provincial government, warning that any negligence in arrangements would not be tolerated.
During a high-level review meeting on security preparations, CM Shah instructed all relevant departments to remain on high alert and ensure close coordination among law enforcement and administrative agencies. He also directed officials to incorporate recommendations from religious scholars into final arrangements for Muharram.
Power distribution companies, including K-Electric, Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), and Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO), have been instructed to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during processions and majalis, particularly along designated routes.
The chief minister further emphasized the importance of religious harmony and inter-sect unity, urging all stakeholders to work collectively to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram across the province. He reaffirmed that the provincial government would deploy all available resources to safeguard lives, property, and public order during the sacred month.
