Sindh Braces for Thunderstorms on August 27: PMD

Islamabad, August 26, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather warning for multiple districts in Sindh, predicting thunderstorms and heavy rain on August 27, 2024.

According to the PMD, intermittent rain, windstorms, and thundershowers are expected in various districts, including Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Islamkot, Mithi, Mirpur Khas, Umarkot, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Mityari, Sanghar, Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, Sukkur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Khairpur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Dadu, and Naushahro Feroze.

The PMD forecast also warns of heavy rainfall in some areas, which could lead to pluvial flooding and inundation, particularly in low-lying areas of Sindh, Balochistan, and southern Punjab. Flash floods are expected in local nullahs, streams, and hill torrents of D.G. Khan, Dadu, Kalat, Khuzdar, Jaffarabad, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Barkhan, Loralai, Awaran, Panjgur, Washuk, Mastung, and Lasbella. There is also a risk of landslides in Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The PMD’s national weather forecast for Tuesday, August 27, 2024, predicts rain, windstorms, and thundershowers across Sindh, northeastern and southern Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Pothohar region, Islamabad, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds and windstorms, is likely at scattered places during this period.

Synoptic Situation

The PMD said a depression currently lies west of Madhya Pradesh, India, and is moving westward. This depression is causing strong monsoon currents to penetrate the southern parts of Pakistan and is expected to affect the upper regions by evening or night. Additionally, a trough of westerly wave is present over the upper parts of the country, contributing to the weather changes.

Recent Weather Conditions

On Monday, August 26, 2024, the PMD said rain, windstorms, and thundershowers were reported in Sindh, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern and southern Punjab, Pothohar region, Islamabad, northeastern and southern Balochistan, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Heavy rainfall with gusty winds was observed in southeastern and lower Sindh as well as upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In the past 24 hours, hot and humid weather prevailed across most of the country, with isolated rain and thundershowers occurring in lower Sindh, northeastern Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Punjab, Potohar region, and Kashmir.

Recorded Rainfall and Temperatures

Significant rainfall amounts included Tharparkar with 47 mm in Nagarparkar, Islamkot with 18 mm, Mithi with 17 mm, and Barkhan in Balochistan with 38 mm. The highest maximum temperatures recorded were 43°C in Dalbandin, 41°C in Bhakkar, and 40°C in D.I. Khan, Noorpur Thal, and Kot Addu.
