Karachi, May 24, 2025 – In a major step towards promoting gender inclusion and sustainable transport, the Sindh government has finalized plans to distribute electric scooters to women across the province.
The initiative will kick off with a computerized balloting next month, during which 1,000 eligible women will receive electric scooters in the first phase of the program.
This decision was announced following a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting in Karachi reviewed the latest developments in Sindh’s evolving transport landscape, with special focus on electric vehicle (EV) projects, including EV taxis and scooters.
Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized the dual impact of the EV scooters and taxi programs—providing employment opportunities for the youth while significantly boosting the mobility of women in Sindh. He noted that the government aims to ensure the launch of these projects, including the distribution of scooters to women, by June 2025. He said these measures are vital to both economic empowerment and environmental sustainability.
The meeting was attended by senior transport officials including Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, MD SMTA Kamal Dayo, CEO Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, and Director Yellow Line Zameer Abbasi. The attendees were briefed on the ongoing infrastructure progress in the Yellow and Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems.
According to the Project Director of the Yellow Line, construction on the Jam Sadiq Bridge—a vital link in the BRT system—is ahead of schedule and will be completed by June 2025. Work on two main depots for the Yellow Line is also progressing rapidly. Meanwhile, the Red Line BRT is seeing fast-tracked work on stations, depots, and the biogas plant.
Sharjeel Inam Memon urged all relevant agencies to maintain momentum and ensure timely delivery of high-quality transport infrastructure. He further stressed the immediate need for 500 additional buses to meet transportation demands in both rural and urban parts of Sindh.
The push to provide electric scooters to women not only symbolizes greater freedom of movement but also reflects the Sindh government’s commitment to inclusive, modern transportation. By empowering women with mobility, Sindh takes a significant step toward gender equality and cleaner urban living.
