Sindh to launch EV taxis on easy instalments

KARACHI – April 30, 2025: The Sindh government has taken a significant step toward modernising public transport by announcing the introduction of Electric Vehicle (EV) taxis that will be provided to the public on easy instalments.

This initiative aims to offer an eco-friendly, affordable transportation option while promoting green mobility across the province.

In a key meeting held in Karachi by the Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Department, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon led discussions on the future of public transport. The meeting was also attended by Qasim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Investment and Public-Private Partnership, Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, and Managing Director of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority, Kamal Dayo.

During the session, officials reviewed the performance and expansion plans for Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers in Karachi. Additionally, they assessed different financial and operational models for distributing EV taxis to drivers and citizens through easy monthly instalments. The program is designed to enhance accessibility to clean transport while supporting drivers with a viable income source.

Another major development discussed was the unification of all existing online taxi services in Karachi under one integrated system. This move is aimed at improving passenger safety, fare regulation, and service consistency. According to Sharjeel Inam Memon, the goal is to streamline taxi operations, reduce unregulated practices, and ensure that all taxis on the road meet proper safety and emissions standards.

He reiterated that providing modern, safe, and environmentally responsible transportation is a top priority of the Sindh government. The unified system will help passengers benefit from reliable taxi services while encouraging the use of electric vehicles.

The meeting also highlighted a separate project to distribute scooters to working women and female students, supporting mobility and empowerment across Sindh.

With these developments, Sindh is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable urban transport in Pakistan.
