The Board of Directors of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has officially approved the Implementation Plan for SMEDA’s comprehensive revamping during its 30th meeting held on Sunday.
The meeting was chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan. Key attendees included Saif Anjum, Federal Secretary for Industries and Production, SMEDA CEO Socrat Aman Rana, and other senior board members.
In his remarks, Haroon Akhtar Khan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering Pakistan’s small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, describing it as the backbone of economic growth. He emphasized that SMEDA’s accelerated efforts are closely aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision to elevate Pakistan’s SMEs to international competitiveness. He further noted that the government is actively engaging international SME experts to support this transformative initiative.
The Board appreciated the proactive steps being taken by SMEDA to implement structural reforms. It was highlighted that the Prime Minister had earlier formed a high-level committee to evaluate SMEDA’s existing framework and recommend strategic changes. Based on the committee’s findings, a detailed revamping proposal was submitted to the Prime Minister on April 9, 2025, outlining a roadmap for restructuring and operational enhancement.
A key component of the approved plan involves outsourcing certain functions to improve service delivery and efficiency. This “Outsourcing Model” for restructuring was endorsed by the Prime Minister and has now received formal approval from the SMEDA Board of Directors. The board acknowledged the necessity of aligning SMEDA’s current human resources with new operational goals, ensuring a smooth transition to a more dynamic and responsive organizational model.
The SMEDA revamping initiative marks a pivotal shift towards transforming the authority into a true catalyst for SME development across Pakistan. With the approval of this plan, SMEDA is poised to play a more strategic role in fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth in the country.
