Sony will stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation titles from January 2028, marking a major shift towards digital-only game distribution, according to an announcement by the company.
Under the new policy, all games released for PlayStation platforms from January 2028 onwards will be available only through digital downloads on the PlayStation Store or via digital redemption codes sold by retailers.
The move will apply exclusively to new releases. Games launched before the January 2028 deadline will continue to be available on physical discs.
Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer habits and broader trends across the entertainment industry, with most PlayStation users now choosing to purchase games digitally.
The announcement represents one of the biggest changes in PlayStation’s history, ending decades of physical game releases that have been a defining feature of home consoles since their introduction.
Physical game discs have traditionally allowed players to own, lend, trade or resell their games after purchase. By contrast, digital purchases remain tied to online accounts and platform storefronts.
Sony’s latest decision follows Rockstar Games’ recent announcement that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch as a digital-only title, highlighting the gaming industry’s accelerating transition away from physical media.
Alongside the announcement, Sony also confirmed plans to discontinue new purchases through the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita later this year. Existing purchases will remain downloadable “for the foreseeable future”, although the company did not specify how long that access would continue.
The shift has renewed debate over digital ownership and game preservation. Consumer advocates have long argued that physical media provides greater long-term security, as digital purchases rely on continued support from platform operators and online storefronts.
Despite those concerns, digital game sales have steadily increased over the past decade, with publishers benefiting from lower distribution costs and greater control over pricing compared with physical retail copies.
Industry analysts expect the move to accelerate the decline of physical gaming media, with other console manufacturers likely to continue expanding their digital ecosystems in future hardware generations.
Sony has not announced any changes to existing PlayStation consoles or confirmed whether future hardware will include disc drives after the transition takes effect in 2028.
