Sony unveils Xperia 1 V with advanced stacked CMOS image sensor

Sony has unveiled the Xperia 1 V, a revolutionary flagship smartphone featuring a state-of-the-art stacked CMOS image sensor with a groundbreaking 2-layer Transistor Pixel technology.

Designed to cater to the needs of creators and empower future content producers, the Xperia 1 V showcases Sony’s cutting-edge innovations.

Gildas Pelliet, Head of IP&S at Sony Europe, emphasized the customer-centric approach behind their product development. He stated, “The Xperia 1 V opens up limitless possibilities for both photo and video creation. As our flagship smartphone, it elevates content creation, viewing experience, gaming performance, battery life, and audio capabilities to the next level.”

Setting a new benchmark, the Xperia 1 V’s newly developed image sensor vividly captures the rich colors and intricate textures of people, landscapes, and even low-light scenes. With its exceptional low-light performance, approximately double that of its predecessor, and the high-speed multi-frame overlay processing technology, the Xperia 1 V allows users to capture noise-resistant photos with a wider dynamic range, rivaling full-frame cameras.

The smartphone boasts a 24 mm lens with a 2-layer Transistor Pixel stacked CMOS image sensor called “Exmor T for mobile,” which is around 1.7 times larger than previous sensors. Additionally, the Xperia 1 V features an 85-125 mm (F2.3-F2.8) optical zoom lens, enabling bright and distortion-free portraits.

Recognized by cinematographers, the Xperia 1 V now includes S-Cinetone, a feature previously available only on professional cameras. This adjustment allows for the beautiful depiction of human skin textures, capturing impressive cinematic images without the need for extensive color grading. The new sensor offers approximately three times the saturation signal level of conventional sensors and employs unique image quality processing to suppress noise in dark scenes, resulting in stunning images with soft colors.

The Xperia 1 V comes equipped with a range of functions, including color presets like Creative Look, found in Sony’s Alpha series cameras, and high-performance real-time auto focus (AF). With various preset color settings, users can capture vibrant flowers, clear blue skies, or achieve a soft, transparent finish. The smartphone’s high-performance Real-time Eye AF and Real-time tracking ensure sharp focus on the eyes of subjects, even analyzing distance information for clear focus on distant objects. Additionally, the Xperia 1 V introduces new high-speed continuous shooting of up to 30 frames per second with AF/AE tracking, ensuring no moment is missed.

Addressing the needs of creators, the Xperia 1 V incorporates the Product Showcase Setting, a popular feature from Sony’s VLOGCAM series. This setting shifts the focus of the camera to the product being showcased, allowing for more engaging shots. The smartphone also includes a new voice priority microphone placed near the rear camera, ensuring clear audio recording even in busy outdoor environments. Moreover, when using the “Videography Pro” video recording function for YouTube™ live streams, creators can view viewer chats in real-time, facilitating immediate interaction.

The user interface of the Xperia 1 V supports vertical shooting, enabling content creation in any orientation, be it vertical or horizontal.

The flagship smartphone features a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, reducing blur for an authentic and immersive viewing experience. Its powerful and low-noise speaker amplifier enhances sound quality, expanding the audio spread and depth, and extending low and high frequencies for dynamic and clear audio. With these features, the Xperia 1 V delivers a remarkable movie and music experience without the need for external speakers.

The rear side of the Xperia 1 V incorporates a functional tactile design, utilizing a uniquely developed textured glass. The fine slits on the sides enhance grip stability, preventing accidental slips while holding the smartphone during shooting or viewing.

Despite the 4K display, the Xperia 1 V offers approximately 20 hours of continuous video playback, thanks to its robust 5,000mAh battery. It supports wireless charging and provides 50% charge in just 30 minutes with quick charging capabilities. Furthermore, Xperia’s optimized charging technology ensures the battery retains 80% or more of its maximum capacity, even after three years of use.

The Xperia 1 V achieves a balance between high performance and durability by improving power consumption and heat dissipation. Equipped with the Snapdragon® 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform, the smartphone exhibits approximately 40% improved power efficiency in the CPU compared to its predecessor. The camera’s power consumption has also been reduced by approximately 20%, while the heat diffusion sheet’s volume has been increased by about 60% to enhance heat dissipation within the device.
