Sophie Turner in Talks to Star as Lara Croft

Sophie Turner is reportedly negotiating to take on the iconic role of Lara Croft in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider adaptation, based on the popular video game franchise. According to Deadline, the series will be written and executive produced by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with production spearheaded by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.

While some fans are thrilled by the casting, the news has sparked mixed reactions among Tomb Raider enthusiasts. On social media, several supporters called Turner a “perfect cast” and a “great choice,” applauding her acting prowess. However, a significant number of fans have expressed dissatisfaction, with one writing, “I like the Tomb Raider franchise, but I don’t really like this pick.”

Another commented, “I like Sophie, but I just watched The Gentlemen on Netflix. Ruby Sear would’ve made a better Lara.” Others were less measured, with one critic saying, “I haven’t liked her since Game of Thrones. Just weak. I’m mad all over again,” and another bluntly adding, “Terrible casting.”

Turner rose to fame as Sansa Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones, earning praise for her portrayal of the character’s evolution. She later starred in the British crime drama limited series Joan and is slated to appear in Haven, a British Prime Video project. Despite her experience, comparisons to previous Lara Croft portrayals loom large, as Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander both brought the adventurer to life in big-screen adaptations.

Interestingly, Turner’s casting comes after a competitive selection process. Reports indicate she was up against Lucy Boynton for the role, with Emma Corrin and Mackenzie Davis also on the producers’ wishlist. However, Corrin and Davis did not screen test for the part.

The Tomb Raider series aims to bring a fresh take on the beloved franchise, with Waller-Bridge’s involvement suggesting a witty, character-driven adaptation. The show marks another major addition to Amazon’s growing portfolio of video game-inspired series, as it seeks to captivate fans of the adventurous archeologist.

Whether Turner can win over skeptical fans remains to be seen, but her potential as Lara Croft has already reignited conversations about the beloved character’s future and how this new iteration will measure up to its predecessors.
