Connor Esterhuizen smashed his maiden international century as South Africa completed a 157-run victory to take an unassailable 2-0 series lead.
South Africa secured the three-match ODI series against Namibia after recording a convincing 157-run victory in the second match at the Namibia Cricket Stadium on Friday. The result gave the Proteas an unassailable 2-0 lead ahead of Sunday’s final game in Windhoek.
The victory was powered by a sensational maiden international century from opener Connor Esterhuizen. The 24-year-old produced a remarkable turnaround after managing only 10 runs in his second ODI during the rain-affected series opener at the same venue on Wednesday.
Esterhuizen played a key role in South Africa’s imposing total of 335 for nine. Following the early dismissal of Jordan Hermann for 20, he combined with Tony de Zorzi to build a crucial 183-run partnership for the second wicket.
The Johannesburg-born batter faced 110 deliveries and struck six sixes and eight fours during his 119-run innings. His outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Esterhuizen’s innings ended in the 36th over when he miscued Namibia’s Ruben Trumpelmann towards captain Gerhard Erasmus at mid-off. De Zorzi departed shortly afterwards after scoring a valuable 79 from his innings, which included six fours and a six.
Jack Brassell was Namibia’s most successful bowler, finishing with four wickets for 64 runs, but the hosts struggled badly while chasing the challenging target.
Namibia’s reply quickly collapsed as Michael van Lingen, Malan Kruger and Jan Frylinck were dismissed without scoring. The hosts were subsequently reduced to 32 for five, leaving them with little chance of challenging South Africa’s total.
Erasmus provided some resistance with 68, while Jan Bait contributed 26. The pair added 71 runs for the seventh wicket to give Namibia some respectability before the innings eventually ended well short of the target.
South Africa will now face Namibia in the third ODI in Windhoek on Sunday before returning home for a three-match ODI series against Australia, beginning on September 24.
