Award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee has responded to criticism surrounding the upcoming biopic Michael, defending its narrative structure and timeline choices.
The film, based on the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, has faced backlash from critics who argue it omits key phases of the singer’s life, including later abuse allegations.
“The Movie Ends at 1988”
Speaking in an interview with CNN, Spike Lee dismissed the criticism, explaining that the film’s timeline concludes in 1988 and therefore does not include events that occurred later.
“First of all, if you’re a movie critic and you’re complaining about the stuff—the movie ends at ’88,” Lee said.
He further emphasized that reviewers were criticizing the film for material that falls outside its narrative scope.
“The stuff you’re talking about, accusations, happen [later],” he added. “So you’re critiquing the film on something that you want in, but it doesn’t work in the timeline of the film.”
Response to Global Audience Reaction
Lee also highlighted the audience response to the film, noting that viewers worldwide have shown strong interest and support despite the controversy.
“People showed up. Worldwide, people showed their love,” he said.
Filmmakers Adjusted Storyline
According to industry reports, the original version of Michael reportedly included events following the first allegations involving Jordan Chandler.
However, the storyline was later revised after legal settlements, with filmmakers shifting focus toward Jackson’s personal life and his relationship with his father instead.
The decision ultimately shaped the final structure of the biopic, narrowing its timeline to earlier stages of the singer’s career.
Ongoing Debate Around Biopics
The controversy highlights a broader debate in Hollywood about how biographical films should handle sensitive and later-life controversies, especially when adapting complex public figures.
As anticipation builds for Michael, discussions continue around creative boundaries, historical accuracy, and storytelling responsibility.
