New Spotify label will identify AI-generated artist personas and limit their inclusion in recommendations.
Spotify has announced a new “AI Persona” label designed to help listeners identify artist profiles whose identities may have been generated using artificial intelligence.
The new label is intended to indicate when an artist’s public identity may be AI-generated and “does not represent a real person”, according to Spotify. The feature is scheduled to begin appearing across the platform in mid-September.
Artists can begin self-disclosing as AI Personas from Thursday. However, Spotify will also review other relevant artist profiles and may apply the label when a public identity, including its name and profile imagery, appears to represent a photorealistic AI-generated identity.
Spotify to limit AI Persona recommendations
Music created by AI Personas will, by default, be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations.
However, listeners who already follow an AI Persona will continue to receive recommendations featuring that artist’s music.
Spotify said the approach is focused on supporting “authentic artists building careers in music” while limiting the promotion of AI-generated identities.
The AI Persona badge will appear on artist profiles, including the profile banner and About section. It will also be displayed in search results and alongside tracks in playlists.
When users tap the badge, Spotify will indicate whether the artist self-disclosed their AI Persona status or whether the platform reviewed the profile and made what it describes as an “informed determination”.
Artists identified by Spotify will have an opportunity to appeal the decision.
Spotify plans reporting system for AI artists
Spotify also plans to introduce a reporting feature in the coming months that will allow users to flag artist profiles they believe represent AI Personas.
The company stressed that the AI Persona label relates specifically to an artist’s public identity, rather than how their music was produced.
For information about the creation of individual tracks, Spotify already provides tools such as AI Credits and SongDNA, which can provide information about the people involved in producing music.
Spotify said its approach to artificial intelligence will continue to evolve alongside changes in the wider music industry.
The company also reiterated its intention to prevent “spam, slop, or low-effort content” from appearing in its recommendations, as AI-generated music and artist identities become increasingly common across streaming platforms.
