Spotify launches Running Mode with AI-powered playlists for Premium users

Spotify has introduced a new Running Mode for its iOS app, offering Premium subscribers a personalised music experience designed specifically for workouts.

The new feature is currently available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.

Running Mode can be accessed through Spotify’s Fitness Hub and aims to provide users with a more engaging and motivating soundtrack while they exercise. The feature debuts with 25 curated running playlists, allowing listeners to tailor their music based on workout type, session duration, beats per minute (BPM), and overall music preferences.

According to Spotify, the playlists are dynamically arranged to create a smooth listening experience throughout the run. Instead of simply shuffling songs, Running Mode seamlessly transitions between tracks to maintain momentum and match the pace of the workout.

In addition to personalised playlists, Running Mode includes optional audio coaching in English. These spoken prompts provide encouragement, timing updates, and workout guidance without interrupting the music. Spotify describes the feature as having “a supportive friend running alongside you,” offering motivation while allowing users to stay focused on their exercise.

The launch reflects Spotify’s increasing focus on integrating fitness and music. The company said prompts related to workouts have become some of the most popular features among users of its Prompted Playlists, highlighting growing demand for personalised fitness experiences within the streaming platform.

Spotify believes that combining curated playlists with lightweight coaching can help runners stay motivated, whether they are completing a quick jog, endurance training, or interval workouts.

At launch, Running Mode is limited to iPhone users with a Spotify Premium subscription in the supported markets. The company has not yet confirmed when the feature will expand to Android devices or additional countries.

The introduction of Running Mode adds another fitness-focused tool to Spotify’s ecosystem as competition among music streaming services increasingly extends beyond audio into personalised wellness and lifestyle experiences.

With customised playlists, adaptive music flow, and optional coaching prompts, Spotify hopes Running Mode will make workouts more enjoyable while helping users maintain their pace and stay motivated throughout every run.
