Sri Lanka Cricket Face Immediate Suspension by ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken immediate action to suspend Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership, citing a breach of obligations as a member.

The suspension is a result of the failure to manage its affairs autonomously, as outlined in the ICC guidelines, and the interference of the government in its operations.

The ICC, in a statement released on Friday night, emphasized that the conditions of the suspension would be determined by the ICC Board in the near future.

The board is scheduled to convene on November 21, where decisions regarding the future steps and potential sanctions will be made clearer.

This development comes at a crucial time for Sri Lanka, as the country is slated to host the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in January and February 2024.

The suspension raises questions about Sri Lanka’s ability to fulfill this hosting responsibility and may have broader implications for the country’s cricketing future.

In the recent ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the Sri Lanka men’s team faced a challenging campaign, winning only two out of nine matches and accumulating four points.

Currently positioned at No.8 in the points table with three more matches to play in the league phase, Sri Lanka’s cricketing woes are further compounded by this suspension, adding uncertainty to their upcoming engagements.
