Sri Lanka Cricket Star Lahiru Thirimanne Announces Retirement

Sri Lanka cricket legend, Lahiru Thirimanne, bids farewell to his illustrious career by announcing his immediate retirement from international cricket.

In a heartfelt social media post, the 33-year-old veteran expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had to represent his country in 197 matches.

Thirimanne’s retirement statement reflected his deep appreciation for the sport and the numerous memories it has provided him throughout the years.

“It has been an absolute honor to represent my country for the past few years,” he wrote, “but with a lot of mixed feelings, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket.”

The elegant left-handed batter’s contributions to Sri Lanka’s cricket have been significant, with three Test centuries and four ODI hundreds under his belt.

Notably, he was part of the triumphant Sri Lankan side that secured victory against India in the 2014 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Mirpur.

Thirimanne’s journey saw him participating in three T20 World Cup campaigns and playing key roles in Sri Lanka’s 50-over World Cup ventures in 2015 and 2019.

The decision to retire was not an easy one for Thirimanne, and while he could not elaborate on the specific reasons, he conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) members, coaches, teammates, physios, trainers, and analysts for their unwavering support and encouragement.

Addressing his fans, supporters, and journalists, Thirimanne expressed deep gratitude for the love, backing, and motivation they bestowed upon him during his career.

Thirimanne’s final appearance for Sri Lanka took place during the second Test against India in Bengaluru in March of the previous year, where he scored eight and zero in his two innings.
