Sri Lanka Finalize 17 Member ODI Squad for Zimbabwe Series

Sri Lanka has finalized its 17-member ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Zimbabwe that is set to commence later this week.

The squad announcement has raised eyebrows as it includes Dasun Shanaka, the recently relieved limited-overs captain, despite his ordinary recent form and the change in leadership.

Initially named in an extended preliminary squad earlier in the week, Kusal Mendis was appointed as the captain, with Charith Asalanka designated as the vice-captain.

Notably missing from the initial lineup was Angelo Mathews, who had made a comeback during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup but failed to secure a spot this time.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who recently took over the T20I captaincy, is set to make a return to the ODI squad after missing the World Cup due to injury.

Another noteworthy comeback is that of Akila Dananjaya, absent from ODIs since 2021. The spin department boasts additional options with Jeffrey Vandersay, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dunith Wellalage forming a formidable trio.

Leading the pace attack is Dilshan Madushanka, who showcased an impressive performance in the World Cup. Supported by Pramod Madushan, Dushmantha Chameera, and a cadre of all-rounders with medium-paced bowling skills, the bowling lineup appears versatile and well-balanced.

Adding an element of excitement to the squad is Janith Liyanage, a batting all-rounder who previously featured in three T20Is in 2022.

With the potential to make his ODI debut, Liyanage’s inclusion enhances the team’s batting depth and offers strategic flexibility for the upcoming series.

The much-anticipated ODI series is scheduled to kick off this Saturday, with all three matches taking place in Colombo. Following the ODI series, the action will continue with three T20Is, promising cricket enthusiasts a thrilling display of skills and competition.

The ODI squad for Sri Lanka is composed of Kusal Mendis as captain (c), with Charith Asalanka serving as vice-captain (vc). The squad further includes Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Sahan Arachchige, Nuwanidu Fernando, Dasun Shanaka, Janith Liyanage, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, Jeffrey Vandersay, Akila Dananjaya, and Wanindu Hasaranga.
