Embolo and Ndoye score as Switzerland seal a convincing 2-0 victory to book their place in the knockout stage
Switzerland secured a comfortable place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Algeria 2-0 in an impressive display on Thursday. Clinical finishing from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye ensured the European side progressed to the next phase of the tournament, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana.
The Swiss team made an energetic start and quickly took control of the contest. Their attacking approach paid off in the 10th minute when young midfielder Johan Manzambi produced a brilliant run through the Algerian defense before delivering a precise low cross. Breel Embolo arrived at the perfect moment to calmly slot the ball into the net, giving Switzerland an early advantage.
Switzerland carried that momentum into the second half and doubled their lead just 48 seconds after the restart. Algeria struggled to organize defensively, allowing Dan Ndoye to capitalize on the lapse and fire a powerful shot beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane. The quick second goal effectively ended Algeria’s hopes of mounting a comeback.
The Swiss side continued to dominate possession and create opportunities throughout the match. Fabian Rieder came close to extending the lead in the 81st minute but surprisingly failed to convert a simple tap-in, missing what appeared to be a certain goal.
The victory also marked a significant milestone for Switzerland. It was the first time the national team had scored twice in a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage match since their memorable 1954 quarterfinal clash against Austria, a thrilling encounter they eventually lost 7-5.
Following the victory, Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka praised his teammates while emphasizing the importance of maintaining their current level of performance in the next round.
“We don’t have any particular advantage in the next game. What we can do is perform as we did today and try to win,” Xhaka said after the match.
The Swiss skipper also reserved special praise for Johan Manzambi, whose creative display played a crucial role in the opening goal.
“He is on his way to becoming a very good player. He is young and has already become a valuable member of our team,” Xhaka added.
Switzerland will now prepare for a Round of 16 showdown in Vancouver, where they will meet the winner of the Colombia versus Ghana fixture as they continue their quest for World Cup success.
