Tamim Iqbal Suffers Heart Attack During DPL Match

Dhaka, March 24, 2025 – Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal suffered a serious heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match on Monday while leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club at the BKSP ground in Savar.

The shocking incident left fans and the cricketing fraternity deeply concerned about the health of one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers.

The distressing episode unfolded shortly after the coin toss when Tamim Iqbal started experiencing intense chest pain while fielding. Initially, he attempted to continue playing but soon realized the discomfort was severe. Medical staff immediately attended to Tamim, and he was swiftly taken to KPJ Specialized Hospital and Nursing Home for an urgent evaluation. There, an ECG was performed, which raised concerns about his heart condition.

Despite medical advice, Iqbal initially attempted to return to the game but experienced another wave of intense chest pain while making his way back to the field. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he was urgently rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a heart attack. He was immediately taken in for an emergency angioplasty, during which a blockage in his coronary artery was successfully removed.

Currently, Tamim Iqbal remains under close observation at Fazilatunnesa Hospital, where he is receiving further treatment. Medical experts have stated that his condition is now stable, but he will require extensive monitoring and rest before making any return to cricket. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed deep concern, with several board officials visiting the hospital to check on his recovery. In response to the unexpected health crisis, the BCB postponed its scheduled meeting for the day.

A legendary figure in Bangladesh cricket, Tamim Iqbal has been instrumental in shaping the country’s cricketing success. Since making his debut in 2007, he has amassed over 15,000 international runs across formats, making him one of Bangladesh’s greatest-ever batsmen. He holds the record for being the country’s highest ODI run-scorer and remains a key player in Test cricket.

Tamim also became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score centuries in all formats of the game, registering 14 ODI and 10 Test centuries. His leadership played a crucial role in Bangladesh’s historic victories, including a memorable series win against Sri Lanka. After briefly announcing his retirement in January 2025, he reversed his decision following high-level discussions, making a return to international cricket.

The entire cricketing world is now rallying behind Tamim Iqbal, praying for his swift recovery. His health will be closely monitored in the coming weeks as the cricket community awaits further updates.
