Tangled live-action set photos divide fans over Flynn Rider

Disney’s first look at the live-action Tangled draws praise for Rapunzel while Flynn Rider’s appearance sparks criticism online.

Disney’s first set photographs from its upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled have generated mixed reactions online, with fans applauding Rapunzel’s faithful appearance while expressing disappointment over the look of Flynn Rider.

Filming is now underway on the highly anticipated remake, with Teagan Croft taking on the role of Rapunzel and Milo Manheim portraying Flynn Rider.

Recently released set photos show Croft wearing Rapunzel’s signature floor-length blonde braid and the character’s iconic purple dress, closely resembling the animated heroine introduced in Disney’s 2010 hit film. Manheim, meanwhile, appears in costume with dark hair, a moustache and a goatee inspired by Flynn Rider.

The first-look images quickly spread across social media, prompting thousands of reactions from Disney fans.

Many praised Disney for staying faithful to Rapunzel’s appearance, particularly her famous golden braid, with several fans saying the costume design successfully captured the spirit of the original animated character.

Others also applauded Croft’s overall styling, noting that her outfit and hairstyle closely matched the beloved Disney princess.

However, reactions to Flynn Rider proved far more divided.

Many social media users criticised Manheim’s hairstyle, arguing that it appeared too short and lacked the rugged, carefree appearance that made the animated Flynn Rider one of Disney’s most popular leading men. Others said his facial hair and styling failed to capture the character’s trademark charm and adventurous personality.

The debate comes months after Manheim’s casting was first announced, when some fans questioned the decision and called for a different actor to portray Flynn Rider. Some online criticism also centred on the actor’s previously expressed political views, with renewed calls from some users for Disney to recast the role.

Following the release of the set photos, social media platforms were flooded with fan edits imagining alternative actors as Flynn Rider, while others urged audiences to wait until the first official trailer before judging the performance.

The live-action Tangled is directed by Michael Gracey, with a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The cast also includes Kathryn Hahn as the villainous Mother Gothel, while Diego Luna has joined the project in an undisclosed role.

Disney has yet to announce an official release date for the film, although the live-action remake is currently expected to arrive in cinemas in 2027.
