Karachi Chamber president urges FBR to restore previous passwords as taxpayers face difficulties accessing IRIS system
KARACHI, September 28, 2026: The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to immediately restore taxpayers’ previous passwords, warning that recent password changes are creating difficulties for people attempting to file their income tax returns ahead of the September 30 deadline.
KCCI President Muhammad Rehan Hanif said only a few days remained before the deadline for filing income tax returns, while a large number of taxpayers were facing problems accessing the FBR’s IRIS tax filing system.
According to Hanif, the FBR has changed the passwords of individuals who are required to file income tax returns. He said the move had created serious difficulties for taxpayers, particularly those who are currently abroad or travelling.
He estimated that at least 30% of taxpayers who are outside Pakistan or travelling are facing difficulties in obtaining their new passwords. Hanif said taxpayers abroad were also experiencing problems because they had not received SMS messages containing their new passwords, affecting their ability to access the IRIS portal.
The KCCI president also pointed to unusually high pressure on the IRIS system as another factor contributing to difficulties in filing returns. He said the system was experiencing heavy traffic and appeared to be overloaded, making it harder for taxpayers to complete the filing process.
Hanif warned that the password changes, combined with the pressure on the online tax system, had made the return-filing process even more complicated during the final days before the deadline.
He called on the FBR to take immediate steps to address the issue and restore the previous passwords so taxpayers can access IRIS without interruption.
The KCCI president stressed that taxpayers should be provided with uninterrupted access to the filing system as the September 30 deadline approaches.
The chamber’s concerns come as taxpayers have only a short period remaining to submit their income tax returns for the relevant tax year. Any continued disruption to access could increase difficulties for taxpayers seeking to complete their filings before the deadline.
The KCCI urged the FBR to resolve the technical and access-related issues on an urgent basis to facilitate taxpayers and ensure a smoother filing process.
