Pop superstar Taylor Swift has been recognised for her creative contributions to music videos at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
Taylor Swift was honoured at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, receiving the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors for her contribution to the art of music videos.
The 36-year-old pop superstar received the special award at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27, with her close friend Dakota Johnson presenting her with the trophy.
Taylor Swift reflects on two decades of music videos
Accepting the honour, Swift thanked MTV for providing a platform for music videos and reflected on her two decades of involvement in the medium.
“First of all, I want to say thank you to MTV for giving this platform to music videos so long ago,” Swift said.
The Lover hitmaker explained that she began appearing in and making music videos around 20 years ago and has since been involved in approximately 60 productions.
Swift said she had personally written and directed 18 music videos, adding that she particularly enjoys the creative process involved in bringing songs to life visually.
“I really love writing and directing music videos,” she said.
Swift thanks fans and collaborators
The singer also credited her fans for making the creative process especially rewarding, saying their enthusiasm and interest in her work have encouraged her to continue exploring music videos.
“I gotta tell you, though, the main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun,” Swift said. “You make it so rewarding because you actually care about what we’re making.”
Swift also thanked the many people who have worked alongside her throughout her music-video career.
“I want to say thank you to everyone who ever worked on a music video that I got to be a part of,” she said. “I learned something from every single person that ever worked alongside.”

Swift then surprised the audience by using the ceremony to premiere her latest self-directed music video.
“Mainly, I want to say thank you to the fans, and rather than say anything else … I would love to, if it’s okay with you, show you my latest music video,” she told the audience.
She subsequently premiered the video for her new song “Patient Zero”, which stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
The inaugural Artist Director Honors award recognises Swift’s expanding role behind the camera, highlighting her work not only as a songwriter and performer but also as a creative force in the visual presentation of her music.
