Tim Allen Opens Up About Awkward Toy Story 5 Scene

Actor Tim Allen has revealed that one particular scene in Toy Story 5 left him feeling uncomfortable, describing a romantic moment between Buzz Lightyear and Jessie as “creepy” despite ultimately appreciating its impact on audiences.

Allen, who reprises his role as Buzz Lightyear in the latest installment of Pixar’s blockbuster animated franchise, shared his thoughts during an interview with US Weekly. The veteran actor said the scene, which features Buzz and Jessie sharing a kiss near the end of the film, initially caught him off guard.

“When I’m doing Toy Story, I’m literally an 8-year-old kid,” Allen said. “That’s the personality I feel is inside Buzz. So it’s like, ‘Oh God, oh no, I’m doing that?!’”

The 73-year-old actor explained that his reaction was also shaped by his experience as a father. Allen has two daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth, and said family movie nights often became awkward whenever romantic scenes appeared on screen.

“Every time there’s a kissing scene, everybody gets really quiet in the room,” Allen said. “Especially when my younger daughter was little. And that is exactly how I responded to Buzz kissing Jessie.”

According to Allen, he even questioned whether Pixar intended to include the scene in the final version of the movie.

“I remember when I first read it, I said, ‘Are you going to show this?’” he recalled.

The actor added that introducing romance between animated characters can raise unexpected questions for viewers, particularly younger fans who have followed the franchise for decades.

“It’s like Woody’s bald spot,” Allen joked. “You kind of move them out of the animated thing, and it gets into some larger dramatic questions.”

Despite his initial hesitation, Allen said he eventually embraced the scene because of the varied reactions it generates from audiences.

“I loved it because it affects everybody in the room,” he said. “Adults react one way, and then kids go, ‘Eew!’ You get that mix of responses.”

Toy Story 5, which was released in cinemas on June 19, continues the adventures of Woody, Buzz, Jessie and their friends while introducing new challenges in a technology-driven world. The film has already attracted significant attention from audiences worldwide, adding another chapter to Pixar’s long-running and successful franchise.
